Fragment of a so-called *libellus* (sacrifice certificate) from the time of the Decian persecution of Christians (c. 250 AD) in the Roman Empire.

Under Emperor Decius, all inhabitants of the Roman Empire were required to offer sacrifices to the state gods to demonstrate their loyalty. Those who did so received a written confirmation (*libellus*) of this act from official witnesses or members of a commission. For early Christians, this ritual posed a profound conflict of faith. Many refused and were executed, while others yielded (the so-called *lapsi*) or purchased forged certificates without actually having performed the sacrifice.
